Donkey

Css

First South American band signed to Sub Pop. Formed in 2003 in\nSão Paulo, Brazil by a group of art-damaged, pop culture omnivores\nwith an abiding thirst for good times.

\n

CSS’s debut full-length Cansei de Ser Sexy (“I got tired of\nbeing sexy” in Brazilian Portuguese) was released in 2006.\nDescribed by Uk newspaper The Guardian as “..an unlikely,\nbrilliantly wrong fusion of Tom Tom Club, dance culture and the\nFall.”

\n

They’ve toured around the world a number of times, with the\nlikes of Gwen Stefani, Ladytron, Klaxons, Diplo, played festivals\nfrom Coachella, Pitchfork to Reading, Roskilde, and Australias own\nV Festival in 2007! * Vocalist Lovefoxx showed up at #3 on NME’s\n2007 “Cool List” and, their song “Music is My Hot, Hot Sex” was\nused in a worldwide iPod Touch ad in late 2007, driving the song,\nnearly a year-and-a-half after its release, to become the highest\ncharting single by a Brazilian band in the history of the Billboard\nHot 100 chart!

\n

Produced in Brazil by the band’s own Adriano Cintra and mixed in\nLos Angeles by Mark “Spike” Stent (Madonna, Bjork, Massive Attack,\nU2, M.I.A., and Arcade Fire), Donkey is tough, street-ready, and\nrecreates the frenetic energy of their live shows! And really, with\nCSS the live show is the thing. Equal parts dance party, urban\ncircus, and out-and-out chaos, the band’s unaffected, unbridled joy\nin performance is for real and for you!

Review

Cansei de Ser Sexy (Tired of Being Sexy) hail from Sao Paulo, Brazil and burst onto the scene a couple of years back with a self-titled record which made them the darlings of dance/rock enthusiasts everywhere. And with good reason.

Their follow up effort Donkey proves it was no fluke, as they deliver another set overflowing with the same sexed-up disco energy that made its predecessor such a treat. Opening track Jager Yoga sets the pace perfectly, with pounding drums and a bassline which is sure to fill dance floors all over town with slim-hipped indie hipsters.

There is a wonderful sense of playfulness and humour throughout the record and with a name like theirs and a singer by the name of Lovefoxxx, well it’s just hard not to love these guys. Oh yeah, and they’ve made one of the party albums of the year.
