Wagner Orchestral Works Vol 5

\n

Our series of works by Richard Wagner, performed by the Royal\nScottish National Orchestra and Neeme Järvi, continues with a disc\nof early symphonies, later marches, and an overture.

\n

Early on in his career, Wagner composed two symphonies, both of\nwhich are included on this disc. The Symphony in C, which he wrote\nwhen he was just nineteen years old, is heavily influenced by\nBeethoven in its character, mood, and instrumentation. Written two\nyears later, in 1834, the Symphony in E was left unfinished, Wagner\ncompleting only the first movement and thirty bars of the second.\nThe completed version recorded here was prepared by the conductor\nFelix Mottl more than fifty years later at the request of Wagner’s\nwidow, Cosima.

\n

The two marches on this disc are the composer’s most obvious\ncontributions to the genre of pomp and circumstance. The\nHuldigungsmarsch was written in 1864 for King Ludwig II of Bavaria.\nThe march-like rhythms and brassy colours complement sections in\nwhich the strings provide a continuously flowing movement, all\nleading to a jubilant conclusion. The Kaisermarsch (1871) was a\ncommission from the publishing firm Peters, who requested from\nWagner a heroic morale booster at a time when the German countries\nwere at war with France. Having initially composed it for military\nband, Wagner soon rewrote it for symphony orchestra, the version\nrecorded on this disc.

\n

The Overture to Rienzi, Wagner’s third completed opera (1838 –\n40), incorporates the melody of Rienzi’s prayer at the start of Act\nV, which became the opera’s best-known aria, and ends with a\ndazzling military march. The Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin (1845\n– 47) has the energy, fervour, and brassy sounds of the Overture to\nDer fliegende Holländer, and displays Wagner’s lasting fascination\nwith creating drama by symphonic means.

Review

With each new disc Benedetti continues to dazzle and on her debut album on the Decca label, the talented and glamorous Nicola Benedetti tackles the world of the Italian baroque violin. The majority of works here are by Vivaldi but there are pieces by Tartini, his famous Devils Trill sonata and Veracini’s Largo from sonata no. 6 in G major. However, the two works on this recording that really grabbed my attention are the arrangements of arias by Vivaldi, transcribed for the violin from the sacred motet Nulla in mundo pax sincera and one from the opera Giustino both really demonstrate the beauty and skill of Benedetti’s playing. The support from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under the skillful baton of Christian Curnyn is excellent.
