Review
Kate Rockstrom, Readings Carlton
The music of Bernard Herrmann is instantly recognizable, even if you didn’t realize he wrote it. Well known for his collaborations with revered film director Alfred Hitchcock this recording through cnados celebrates the composer as a purely classical composer. The major work on the album is his Cantata for male chorus, Moby Dick. This is a resonant recording that should be actively listened to for its complete length to experience the full drama of the story. The second work is the Sinfonietta for String Orchestra. Much more avant-garde in style, the dissonance and comparatively light orchestration is in stark contrast to the Cantata. Herrmann should be revisited in contemporary listening, if you’re a fan of early 20th century repertoire, this cannot fail to please.
