Widor Piano Concertos

\n

Charles-Marie Widor was born in Lyon to a family of organ\nbuilders and consequently became an organist of great skill and an\nassistant to Camille Saint-Saëns at La Madeleine in Paris at the\nage of twenty-four.

\n

Today, Widor’s compositions for organ have a prominent position\nin the instrument’s core repertoire, but it is often forgotten that\nthe composer wrote many other significant works, notably his two\npiano concertos. Surprisingly, these are the first recordings of\nthe concertos and are a much-awaited addition to the numerous world\npremiere recordings featured in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto\nseries, now reaching its 55th volume and still unearthing\nlittle-known works to consistently dazzling effect.

\n

Following the success of his renditions of the Draeseke and\nJadassohn concertos, pianist Markus Becker makes a welcome return\nto the series. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the\nremarkable Thierry Fischer more than do justice to Widor’s\nimaginative orchestrations.

Widor:

Review

Charles Marie Widor is not a name familiar to most people, however in his day he was considered not only one of the best organists in France, but also a composer to be reckoned with. Although many of his works have fallen out of favour, Hyperion’s new disc of his two Piano Concertos and Fantaisie will hopefully change that. Framed by two Germanic feeling Piano Concertos, the whimsical Fantaisie in the centre of the disk is certainly a highlight with the infectious joy of the third movement of the 1st Piano Concerto well worth a repeat listen.
