Prokofiev Violin Concerto No 2

Jansen Janine

Janine Jansen has been a top-selling artist since her debut\nrecording in 2004 for Decca sold 300,000 records. A major star in\nEurope, especially the Netherlands, Jansen has frequently topped\nthe classical charts and featured in the pop charts.

\n

For this release, Jansen is accompanied in the concerto by the\nLondon Philharmonic Orchestra under its Russian-born Principal\nConductor Vladimir Jurowski. When she played the work with the LPO\nin London as part of its 2012 “Prokofiev: Man of the People?”\nfestival, The Times hailed her as “a violinist who is right now on\nmatchless form … a player that you follow wherever she leads”

\n

Composed in the mid1930s, on the eve of his return to the USSR,\nProkofiev’s much-loved Violin Concerto No.2 boasts the same\naccessible tunefulness and emotional directness as his enduringly\npopular ballet Romeo and Juliet, whose love music is ravishingly\nrecalled in the soaring, songlike lyricism of the concerto’s slow\ncentral movement. For contrast the concerto is coupled with two\nchamber works conceived in the same decade: the stark yet\nexpressive Sonata for Two Violins (1932) and the darkly tragic\nViolin Sonata No.1 (1938–46), which constitutes the composer’s\ncovert memorial to those many friends and colleagues lost during\nStalin’s Great Terror and the subsequent World War.

Review

There is something immensely satisfying about Prokofiev Violin repertoire. With a luscious sounds from the violin and alternatively heavy and light orchestrations this is music that is always delightful. This particular recording is with Janine Jansen taking the title role as soloist, London Philharmonic and Vladimir Jurowski creating another world around her. There is the full range of emotions in each of these works. From the sparse and conversational Sonata for 2 Violins to the seemingly confused and moody Sonata for Violin and Piano. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed listening to this recording, so much so that once it finished I simply pressed play again to start all over from the beginning.
