Following their album of French music for two pianos, father and son Vladimir and Vovka Ashkenazy revel in their musical heritage with this dazzling programme by the great composers of Russia. Three of the works have been arranged by Vovka Ashkenazy himself, including Mussorgsky’s Night On The Bald Mountain and the album’s virtuosic finale, Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from his opera Prince Igor. His two-piano arrangement of Glinka’s lilting Valse-fantaisie is itself based on Sergei Lyapunov’s arrangement for four hands.

Well here’s another decidedly talented family. Vladimir Ashkenazy is consistently featuring in my reviews and in our Monthly and now he’s brought the son into the family business. Vovka Ashkenazy is showing his proficiency as not only a pianist in this album but also as the chief arranger of these mainly orchestral works. Titled ‘Russian Fantasy’, the far son piano duo perform Rachmaninov Suite No. 1 for two pianos, Scriabin’s Fantasie for two pianos and Vovka’s arrangements of Night on the Bald Mountain and Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s Prince Igor. Although the arrangements lack the depth of the original orchestral versions, the works written for two pianos have much more musicality and feeling to make this recording very worthwhile to piano lovers.
