Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Yakov Kreizberg

\n

Julia Fischer follows her extraordinary Grammy-nominated\nrecording of the fiendish Paganini Caprices with a contrasting\nalbum − a lyrical and poetic set of impressionistic works for\nviolin and orchestra.

\n

Comprising four substantial pieces, this unique program is\nheaded by Suk’s virtuosic Fantasy, a mini-concerto that is now\njustifiably finding its way into the concert repertoire. It is\naccompanied by two well-known tone poems – the elegant Poème by\nChausson and the English pastoral The Lark Ascending by Vaughan\nWilliams. The album is completed by Respighi’s Poema autunnale (of\nwhich there is only one other recording in the catalogue), making\nthe program truly multinational.

\n

“The programme…needs close rapport between soloist and\norchestra. Here Fischer was lucky, for her conducting partner — for\nthe last time alas — is Yakov Kreizberg…[who] cradles Fischer\nvery tenderly, particularly in the Respighi…Fischer’s golden\nmoments? Her singing line in the Respighi. Twinkling and darting in\nthe Suk. And definitely her lark: nature enthroned in simple glory.\nMay she long continue to enchant us.” The Times, April\n2011

Review

Lush orchestrations withmoments of clarity is thebest way to describe thisnew offering from esteemedviolinist Julia Fischer.Poeme features four works, all from a similar late-Romantic tradition.Respighi’s Poema Autunnale opens therecording followed by Suk Fantasy in Dminor, the Chausson Poeme, which gives thealbum its title, and finishing with the favourite Lark Ascending by VaughanWilliams. With the Orchestre Philharmoniquede Monte-Carlo and Yakov Kreizbergat the helm, this is a beautiful recording towrap yourself in for those cold winter daysahead.
