Songs of Ascension is a major new recording from composer\nMeredith Monk - one of the core artists of ECM New Series - and her\nvocal ensemble. It finds her playing with the musical, sonic,\nmetaphysical and literal connotations of upward movement. This is\nher first new album for the label since 2007’s impermanence, so\nit’s eagerly awaited by her many admirers around the world.

\n

In recent years Meredith Monk’s work has been expanding into the\nrealms of the orchestra and string quartet. Here she teams up with\na string quartet of New York players well versed in new music. With\nwinds, percussion and two vocal groups added to her already\nextraordinary singers, this is one of Monk’s most musically\nambitious ventures. Voices and instruments are paired and balanced\nagainst each other to an extent rare in her music.

Review

Meredith Monk is a true visionary andpioneer in the power and versatility of thehuman voice. Performing and composingfor more than 40 years, Monk’s versatilityextends beyond just her vocal gymnastics;she has worked as a director, filmmaker andchoreographer, creating multi-disciplinaryworks that dwell in the spaces between music, theatre, and dance. Monk’s new albumSongs of Ascension is certainly one of hermore ‘ethereal’ projects to date. Collaboratingwith the Todd Reynolds string quartetand the M6 vocal ensemble, Monk’s liltingvocals and extended techniques transcendwhat we commonly refer to as ‘contemporary’music and ancient melodies into an album that continuously lifts one’s spirit andchallenges the ear.
