Readings is an independent bookseller with several branches located around Melbourne; in Carlton, Doncaster, Hawthorn, Malvern, St Kilda, Emporium, and within the State Library of Victoria, plus an online shop. You can read more about us here.

When employment opportunities arise, our Managers look to engage enthusiastic retailers who share our passion for books, music and film, who can demonstrate a strong customer service focus, and who are keen to share their product knowledge.

We’re fortunate to receive many unsolicited applications for employment which means, when employment opportunities do come up, our Managers are generally able to take on people with bookselling or other relevant industry experience.

Bookseller, Children's specialist – Readings Doncaster

We are looking for a skilled bookseller to join our Doncaster shop. The ideal candidate will have expertise in children's literature and will serve as our dedicated Children's Specialist. The position is a permanent part-time role of approximately 30 hours spread across 4 days. Responsibilities for this role encompass various tasks related to our Children's inventory. These include managing inventory, handling stock, organising shelves, promoting Children's books, and assisting with general shop duties.

The ideal applicant will have demonstrated:

  • A solid retail sales track record, specifically in the book industry
  • Extensive knowledge of Children’s literature
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven high level customer service skills
  • Excellent product merchandising skills
  • Solid computer skills, including use of spreadsheets, the internet, and inventory management systems.

Prior experience working with Circlesoft would be an advantage.

Assistant Accountant - Head Office, West Melbourne

We are looking for a technical Assistant Accountant to work on a permanent, full-time basis. The Assistant Accountant is responsible for managing the company's general ledger, banking, and cash activities, accurately recording and reconciling sales, managing creditor invoices and payments, and ensuring strict adherence to tax regulations. They also oversee payroll tax management, monitor cash flow, maintain the fixed asset register, and generate trial balances and financial reports. This position requires working closely with external auditors, handling accounting enquiries, and ensuring internal controls.

The incumbent is accountable to the CFO and requires a minimum of three years of experience, a relevant degree or certification, excellent communication skills, and proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office.

The ideal applicant will have demonstrated:

  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a certificate qualification combined with practical accounting experience, preferably in a retail setting.
  • High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy in financial records, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Familiarity with tax regulations and compliance.
  • Organisational skills to maintain orderly financial records, documents, and reports.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer applications:
  • Microsoft Office Suite, Strong Excel Skills
  • Xero Accounting Software
  • Fixed Asset Register
  • Exposure to Payroll and T&A Software
