Steve Reich: Phase to Face
This great documentary film is likely to interest fans, as well as those less familiar with Steve Reich, one of the late twentieth century’s key musical figures. Interviews with Reich are combined with excerpts from performances and rehearsals of some of the best known works from across his career, providing a great introduction to his music, as well as an insight into the ideas and thought processes behind it. Reich comes across as charismatic and even modest, despite clearly recognising his pivotal role in the last century’s rebellious swing away from the rigorous atonality prescribed by modernists since Schoenberg, towards music that re-embraced and re-evaluated traditional tonality, and was comfortable drawing from influences as distant as jazz and African drumming.
