Faure: Cello Sonatas
When I first put this CD into the player and the first few bars jumped out of the speakers, I thought I’d inserted the wrong CD. Instead of the lyrical Faure I was expecting, as seen in his Elegie Op 24 and Romance Op 69, I got a twentieth century exciting and interesting Cello Sonata No. 1. What a joy it is too! With a romantic sound still present, it’s got rhythm intensity with use of dissonances particular to Faure. Although still featuring our favourite cello works (including the above), I will be listening to these two exciting and interesting sonatas repeatedly for a while.
