Brigid Lucy Wants a Pet by Leonie Norrington

Poor Brigid Lucy. Ever since she moved to the city she’s wanted a pet, but her new backyard is too small for the dogs, or the ponies, or the rabbits she used to have on the farm. What she’d really like is a pet cat, but her dad is allergic, and besides, the invisible imp that lives in her hair is fairly sure a cat would eat him.

Brigid Lucy (or Biddy to her family) tries to settle for a pet slug called Oscar, but after her dad almost eats him things take a turn for the worse, and Biddy must once again start the pet hunt. A visit to the pet shop finds Biddy a new friend, but she quickly learns that being a pet owner can be harder than it seems.

Brigid Lucy Wants a Pet is a lively, quirky read which is really brightened up by the plucky imp narrator and Tamsin Ainslie’s beautiful illustrations scattered throughout. Young readers starting out on their first chapter books will have a lot of fun with Brigid Lucy, and can look forward to more of her adventures with further books in the series on the way.
