The Holy Pictures: David Holmes

Well, this is certainly quite a different David Holmes from the one I remember. I had let my interest in David Holmes’s music wane over the past few years, while still retaining fond memories of his early albums This Film’s Crap, Let’s Slash the Seats and Let’s Get Killed, not to mention his stellar soundtrack compositions for Soderbergh films Out of Sigh*t and the *Ocean’s Eleven trilogy. This is not a sampling/cut-and-paste effort and doesn’t have his trademark groove-based tunes but is an actual band with Holmes singing on most of the tracks – a vocal style that reminds me of both The Stone Roses and Kevin Shields. The latter part of the album has some very nice Eno-esque instrumentals and while I’m not quite sure what The Holy Pictures is trying to be, there is no doubt that it is a great, interesting listen.
