Canadian writer and director Sarah Polley has created a tender and unforgettable love letter to her parents with this documentary, a pastiche of dramatised retellings and ‘home videos’, genuine archive footage and intimate testimonies that explore the unreliability of memory and the act of storytelling. Rather than follow a linear narrative, the design of the film is closer to that of an onion; the story is peeled layer by layer, and in this manner, Sarah’s search is less one for ‘the truth’ as a definitive conclusion, but rather a way to allow for conflicting truths to co-exist. The result is astonishingly moving.
