Solace of the Road: Siobhan Dowd

Holly is fifteen and has been in and out of care all her life. When she decides that her new foster parents in London are too well meaning and drippy for her tastes, she steals a blonde wig and hits the road, aiming to get back to her beloved mum in Ireland. When she puts the wig on Holly becomes Solace - older, more sophisticated, and bad. Solace of the Road is basically a road trip novel; we see the world through Holly’s eyes as she meets people from all walks of life, and witness her gradually confronting her troubled past.

I really enjoyed this book, but it did take me a few chapters to get into it. Once I did though I was hooked. Solace is written in Holly’s voice, and it’s a different one: tough, sarcastic, uneducated, blunt and funny. Holly is a great creation. At the start of the novel she’s quite immature and she puts herself in some ridiculous and dangerous situations. By the end of the book though, even though she has had to admit some painful truths, you get the feeling that Holly’s life is only going to get better.
