This exquisite picture book explores the mysterious magic of birds and how children need the space and encouragement to dream, wonder and explore so that one day they too can fly. The beautiful pencil illustrations are a combination of detail and the seemingly haphazard sketchiness and simplicity of the medium. The feeling of movement and flight is achieved by the drawings flowing off the pages and yet there is a calming sense of stillness. The sparse text is perfectly married to the pictures and the subtle use of subdued colour suggests secrecy. As an adult experiencing this book, I felt I was privy to the innocent imaginations and innate knowing of children.
