Mr Love and Justice: Billy Bragg

Having just turned 50, Mr Bragg finally returns with his new album, Mr Love and Justice. Only his ninth studio album in a career spanning 25 years, he has been particularly quiet since he became a father – this is only his third album of his own songs since 1991 (there were of course two great albums of discovered Woody Guthrie songs that he recorded with Wilco). It’s great to hear his voice again, not that it’s ever been a beautiful thing, but it is unmistakably his. I have always liked how he mixed pop and politics with the occasional love song. This is a fine album that needs a couple of listens, but rewards those willing to put in the effort.
