Island Songs by Amy Dickson & Sydney Symphony Orchestra

I’ve noticed over the years that saxophonist Amy Dickson has become a true champion of contemporary classical music. Often presenting modern music in a way that is accessible to everyone, she also excels at the technical and musical challenges this music presents. Island Songs is her latest album and is an understated celebration of contemporary Australian music with works by the late lamented Peter Sculthorpe, the always interesting Brett Dean and the ever brilliant Ross Edwards.

The works here are oddly both accessible and challenging to listen to. With all the hallmarks of modern repertoire, the outrageous rhythms, sudden dynamic contrasts and complex melodic ideas Dickson manages to tie all this music together with her sinuous sound and mastery of her instrument. There are moments that seem to be pulled from the very depths of the orchestra and saxophone to create anarchy that dissolves into brilliant sunshine. This recording is yet another feather in the hat of this brilliant musician and her colleagues at the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
