Pierre Monteux is a name that I was not familiar with when I opened this CD to listen. Right from the opening notes of the Dvorak Symphony No 7 though I was entranced by the surety of the interpretation. It was when I read the liner notes and realised that not only was he the conductor at the infamous premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring but these two works were recorded toward the end of his illustrious career that I understood. Cleaned up and crystal clear this is a chance to hear a master at the height of his powers.
