Age of Shiva: Manil Suri
Seven years after independence, after partition, India still struggles with the aftermath. India is to be a modern, secular society throwing off the shackles of superstition. Meera is the product of that conflict; her mother was 16 and illiterate when she made an arranged marriage to her father, Rajinder Sawhney – publisher and political aspirant. For Rajinder the constraints of Islam and Hinduism are to be scorned.
To his dismay, Meera becomes infatuated with Dev Arora, an aspiring singer from a devout Hindu family and after a minor scandal, marries Dev and goes to live with his family. Her father tries to force her to become the modern Indian woman, using his financial support to manipulate Meera and her husband. A rich insight to a wonderfully complex society in transition.
