This is a collection of articles which illustrate the history of dam technology from ancient to modern times. It is part of a series which explores the history of civil engineering. Technical issues that underlie difference in various dam designs represent an important component of these articles. However, articles have also been selected that help illuminate why various human societies have built dams and how social or seemingly non-technical factors have influenced the process of dam design.
