Dreamland

Tom Gilling

The long-awaited new novel by the author of The Sooterkin and Miles McGinty It was just a little lie. But it has landed Nick Carmody in serious trouble. It didn’t seem much - to say he was the one driving Danny Grogan’s car when it was caught by a speed camera. And Danny’s billionaire father has promised to make the lie worth his while. But Danny hasn’t told him the full story, and when Nick Carmody stands up in court he doesn’t quite know what it is he’s admitting to. By the time he works it out, it is too late.
Soon Nick’s ‘good deed’ has hurled him into a nightmare of dirty secrets, corruption and increasing danger. It leaves him with no choice - he needs to disappear. Three years as a crime reporter taught him a lot about aliases, deception, and getting away with it. But Nick soon learns something else- the person you are pretending to be can be a lot more dangerous.

Review

Nick Carmody is a has-been crime reporter who lives with a fellow subeditor, her daughter and an arthritic greyhound. His life seems average until he attends the wake of an old classmate. Nick soon finds himself embroiled in the nefarious objectives of a tycoon. A naïve and desperate act, partly fuelled by his restricted finances, will cast him into a world of payoffs and perjury. There’s no turning back when you sell your soul. He knows this well, so one night he leaves it all behind in an attempt to escape his dilemma. But sinister forces are at work and the past is not something that can always be relinquished. Someone’s always lurking in the shadows, and people are not always what they seem.

This is a plot that unravels perfectly like a Hollywood movie. There are twists and turns with a fair share of serendipitous occurrences. Gilling has done a good job at holding the reader’s attention thanks to the brevity of his style. He also displays a unique insight into human psychology. Dreamland is in many ways an indictment of our tabloid culture. A great read!
