The Mystery of the Magic Stones: Polly and Buster BOOK TWO

Sally Rippin

From Australia’s best-selling author, Sally Rippin, comes Polly and Buster - a junior fiction series about the magic of friendship.

What would you do if everyone thought your best friend was dangerous?

Polly the witch and Buster the monster shouldn’t be friends. And they definitely shouldn’t be on the run from almost everyone in town.

But when Polly is called to the Hollow Valley Mines - the forbidden, haunted mines - by her magic stones, these two best friends have a big decision to make.

Do they stay hidden and safe, or risk it all to save the day?

The magical sequel to The Wayward Witch and the Feelings Monster.

Longlisted for the 2019 ABIA Book of the Year for Younger Children

Sally Rippin is the author of over 50 books for young readers, including the best-selling Billie B Brown early reader series, and its spin-offs: Billie B Mysteries, Billie’s Adventures and the Hey Jack! series. Her Polly and Buster series is accompanied by her own enchanting illustrations.

Review

My heart feels swollen with ‘happy-sadness’ after reading this delightful sequel to Sally Rippin’s The Wayward Witch and the Feelings Monster. Polly and Buster’s friendship is still under threat – societal pressure is pulling them apart. In Polly and Buster’s world, witches and monsters aren’t seen as equals, and friendship between the two kinds is strongly discouraged. Those that would flout this rule are judged unfairly and their subsequent punishment can be harsh.

Taking a stand against this injustice takes courage. But it is the power of kindness and empathy for our darkest selves, and that of others, that holds the power to break down prejudice and intolerance. That is the beautiful truth that binds this story together. And, just like the visually emphasised, pop-out, bold words on the page – such as heart squeeze, surge of awe, whoops with excitement and snorts with laughter – this story bubbles with emotional bursts that envelop the reader with warmth and goodness.
