Welcome to Country
Marcia Langton
Winner of the 2019 Indie Book Award for illustrated non-fiction
Welcome to Country is a curated guidebook to Indigenous Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. In its pages, author Professor Marcia Langton offers fascinating insights into Indigenous languages and customs, history, native title, art and dance, storytelling, and cultural awareness and etiquette for visitors. There is also a directory of Indigenous tourism experiences, organised by state or territory, covering galleries and festivals, national parks and museums, communities that are open to visitors, as well as tours and performances.
Review
by Mark Rubbo
I sense a growing desire for non-Indigenous Australians to know about our Indigenous culture. The recent successes of Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia (one of our bestsellers last month) and Alexis Wright’s Stella Prize-winning biography, Tracker, attest to that.
Academic Marcia Langton has produced the perfect book for people who want to know more about our rich Indigenous history. Ostensibly a travel guide, it’s also an introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culture, and places of interest. Whether you just want to find out more about where you live or you want to plan a trip, this is a wonderful guide to culture and places. Beautifully produced and illustrated, it’s equally at home on the shelf or in the glove box.
