Ballet Cat

Bob Shea

Ballet Cat and Sparkles the Pony are trying to decide what to play today. Nothing that Sparkles suggests–making crafts, playing checkers, and selling lemonade–goes well with the leaping, spinning, and twirling that Ballet Cat likes to do. When Sparkles’s leaps, spins, and twirls seem halfhearted, Ballet Cat asks him what’s wrong. Sparkles doesn’t want to say. He has a secret that Ballet Cat won’t want to hear. What Sparkles doesn’t know is that Ballet Cat has a secret of her own, a totally secret secret. Once their secrets are shared, will their friendship end, or be stronger than ever?

Review

Ballet Cat and Sparkles the Pony are the very best of friends. They are trying to decide what to play today but each idea they have is not quite right. They just don’t match well with irrepressible Ballet Cat’s need for constant movement. Sometimes even best friends don’t want to play exactly the same games.

How they negotiate this common dilemma is an absolute delight and a joy to read. Great fun for a first reader or as a read-aloud to younger children, this story feels similar to an Elephant and Piggie book but with the unique humour and drawings of the effervescent Bob Shea.
