Die Soziologie ist von der Renaissance nationaler und nationalistischer Bewegungen gegen Ende der achtziger Jahre uberrascht worden. Der Band geht zunachst der Frage nach, welche theoriegeschichtlichen Entwicklungen fur diese Unterschatzung verantwortlich zu machen sind. Im zweiten Schritt wird ein systemtheoretisch fundierter Ansatz vorgestellt, der die Nation als ein Konstrukt begreift, mit dessen Hilfe undurchschaubare soziale Prozesse vermeintlich verstandlicher werden. Im abschliessenden dritten Teil wird anhand umfangreichen soziologisch-historischen Materials die Entwicklung des Konstrukts Nation bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart nachgezeichnet.
