The Other Side Of The Rock

Shane Howard

‘Other Side of the Rock’ is Shane Howards 12th solo album features new recordings of old songs tracking the 30 year journey of one of Australia’s great singer/songwriters. This album is a collection of Howard’s most accomplished songs, highlighting the timeless quality of his work. Featuring two new versions of Howards iconic song ‘Solid Rock’, written after an ‘inma’ at Uluru in 1982, the album is both surprising and yet familiar. ‘Solid Rock-Puli Kunpunka’ is Pitjantjatjara for ‘Solid Rock’ and the track features the voices of school kids from the APY lands singing in language along with Archie Roach, Emma Donovan, Natalie Pa'apa'a, Myra Howard and Amy Saunders. Produced by Howard,‘Other Side of the Rock’ features band members, Ruben Shannon, John Hudson and Rory McDougall with special guests Bruce Haymes, Ross Hannaford, Bart Willoughby, Archie Roach, Errki Veltheim, Emma Donovan, Peter Denahy, Will Barton, Myra Howard, Mark Atkins and Amy Saunders.

Review

Shane Howard celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of his groundbreaking ‘Solid Rock’ from Spirit of Place with Other Side of the Rock, a reworking of some of his best-known songs spanning an illustrious music career.

While he has always had an affinity with the Australian land and its people, he has also tapped into his love of Ireland and its roots with a number of his releases, blending folk with his laidback songwriting style.

This release is purely Australian though, and is bookended by two versions of ‘Solid Rock’, a song that lives and breathes in the soil from which it was written. One of Australia’s most treasured artists.
