Chick Corea, Stefano Bollani

Chick Corea and Stefano Bollani, both stars of their instruments for their generations, combine their considerable talents for this first recorded collaboration, a document of a most spirited gig in Orvieto’s Teatro Mancinelli from December 2010.

Effervescent virtuosity abounds as the two piano genii romp through a program that includes Jobim and Buarque’s ‘Portrait in Black and White’, the swing ballad ‘Darn That Dream’, Fats Waller’s ‘Jitterbug Waltz’, Miles Davis’s ‘Nardis’, blues, improvisations and more. And this recording was Corea’s first ECM date in more than a quarter-century.

Chick Corea and Stefano Bollani rewrite, or at the very least extend, the jazz piano rulebook at a historic duo performance at Umbria’s Teatro Mancinelli.

Corea forged his reputation as perhaps acoustic piano’s bravest improviser with a string of ECM masterpieces before leaving the label for greenbacker pasture$. In his first ECM disc in 25 years he may be passing the torch to Bollani, the young Italian polymath. The unstoppable program is basically one unbroken stream of almost cheeky creativity, covering Jobim, Waller, Miles, straight blues, spacey avant-improv and more. Serious fun.
