Josh Tillman (aka J Tillman) departed the FLEET FOXES as their drummer in 2011 to focus on his solo project under the moniker of FATHER JOHN MISTY. Despite releasing a number of solo albums under J Tillman - which saw him invited to tour with DAMIAN JURADO and JESSE SYKES, ‘Fear Fun’ is the debut album for Father John Misty. When discussing ‘Father John Misty’, Tillman paraphrases PHILIP ROTH: “It’s all of me and none of me, if you can’t see that, you won’t get it'. What I call it is totally arbitrary, but I like the name. You’ve got to have a name. I never got to choose mine.”
Produced by FLEET FOXES' producer PHIL EK (who has also worked with BAND OF HORSES and MODEST MOUSE). Musically, ‘Fear Fun’ consists of such disparate elements as WAYLON JENNINGS, HARRY NILSSON, and ARTHUR RUSELL, often within the same song. Tillman’s voice has never been better and often sounds like ROY ORBISON at his most joyous, while the music maintains a dark, mysterious and yet conversely playful, almost Dionysian quality.

J Tillman has been a favourite of the music staff at Readings for some years, for his most recent solo albums and of course his work with The Fleet Foxes (2008-2011). But now his new project Father John Misty has arrived and it is possibly the best thing he has done.
Musically, Fear Fun consists of such disparate elements as Waylon Jennings, Harry Nilsson, Arthur Russell, ‘All Things Must Pass’, and ‘Physical Graffiti’, often within the same song.
Tillman’s voice has never been better and often sounds like Roy Orbison, while the music maintains a dark, mysterious and yet conversely playful, almost Dionysian quality.
