Long before today's native Americans lived in the San Juan Basin of Colorado and New Mexico, this high mountain area was inhabited by a civilization wrapped in ritual and spiritualism. A young boy, Honaw, lived in a small peaceful village where he was being instructed by his grandfather to become a spiritual leader. The actions of an evil man changed his life and the lives of his people.

While leading his people on a long, ardous journey to find the beacon in the distance, he was needed to relieve the suffering of his people. He became a wise and compassionante leader. The evil man came back into Honaw's life, however, and threatened him and his people. Honaw needed to find a way to save them.
