The book contains eleven stories of folk heroes and heroines immortalized through the ballads sung by generations of artists belonging mostly to the lower castes of the society of Mithila. The heroes themselves belonged to those castes and are depicted to be benevolent, brave and always ready to fight for injustice. Several of them are worshipped as deities and have temples also constructed for them.
