Do you ever think the punishments the guilty receive in court are too lenient? Benjamin Doyle does. When he was younger, he wanted to commit the perfect murder and indulged in a few until he decided to stop. Years later he has become a magistrate and is increasingly frustrated by the punishments so many defendants receive. Justice in his view is not being served so he decides to act. Appropriate retributions follow, each one fitting the original crime committed.
DCI Harvey Tarquin is the lead detective in the newly formed SCU, the Serious Crimes Unit in Preston. Defendants released on what appears to be unwarranted bail are being attacked. His team became suspicious when each victim was granted bail when Benjamin Doyle was the chairperson, but a magistrate as a vigilante seems unthinkable.
Harvey's team are also dealing with the victims of a scam, gullible people falling for the promise of rich rewards when they invest in new apartments being built on the Costa del Sol. Some end up not only poorer but dead!
Are the two sets of investigations linked? And if so, how?
As the body count rises the DCI's team have their work cut out. The breakthrough will come. But when?
