The North Carolina 41st Regiment Volunteers AKA the North Carolina 3rd Cavalry Regiment was organized at Kinston, NC, with men from New Hanover, Onslow, Caswell, Harnett, Lenoir, Burke, Halifax, Wake, Martin and Washington counties. Co. C was mustered in as part of Edmondston's Battalion N.C. Cavalry, a Battalion which was raised but never organized. Co. D appears to have been intended for the 63rd Regt. N.C.T., but did not serve there. The 3rd was assigned to the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia and saw action at White Hall, Goldsboro, Greenville, Drewry's Bluff, and in the Petersburg area. It was then transferred to Barringer's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, and fought south of the James River and in the Appomattox Campaign.
