Is Hell Eternal or Will God’s Plan Fail? (1920)

Death comes to Dan Fields on the operating table at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Fated in its untimely occurrence, a reprieve is offered to the man on the gurney by Roark. This ethereal visitor grants Dan a continued life on earth in exchange for his efforts to right the wrongs that sometimes happen to unfortunate people. One of those wrongs is essentially what happened in the operating room at St. Joseph’s hospital: doctors botched the operation. We see five vignettes woven into the fabric of this ongoing novel. They play on the strange power of Roark, and his undiluted moral standards. Omniscience acts as the vehicle which the writer uses to spur the story. Dan Fields, the protagonist of The Eighth Insignia, finds himself inadvertently knitting together these five vignettes that make up the novel. The ending surprises even the most avid reader.
