Wednesday, lgth April 1820. My dear Catharine, ?Dr Clark came here to-day at five o'clock, and intends staying all to-morrow. He goes to Melrose on Friday morning, and thence home. He is very vexed at not seeing you, as he says he came chiefly for that purpose, and I am so, too, for I am too proud of you not to wish to show you to my friends. But you must not come home, as he makes so short a stay. I walked a mile and a half to meet Clark, missed him, and found him on my return, at my fireside. He was very weary; he had ridden from Winterfield, near Dunbar, this morning. I breakfasted with Mr Young this morning; there were present Mr Sworde and Mr Balmer. At Mr Laurie’s last night, the same company as above, with Mr Bland, from the neighbourhood of Paisley. Addison Steavenson's2 dinner party was put off until to-morrow, and I cannot go.? Thursday, April 2Oth. Clark is at this very moment copying a letter from your album. He goes away to-morrow. He sends his very best compliments, and is sorry he has missed you.?Yours affectionately, GEORGE JOHNSTON. Mrs Johnston, Easington House, Belford. 1 Captain William Landless, R.N., Mrs Johnston’s uncle by marriage with Margaret Charles, is thus mentioned by Lord Collingwood in a letter to Lord Barbara, dated 28th March 1806. Lieutenant Landless, the only person I recommended to your Lordship, is an old and a valuable officer; he has followed me from ship to ship, all the war.
