Nine year old Daniel Santos, his telepathic black wolf, Ebony, and teenage Ojibwa friend, Running Fawn, on a lake on Manitoulin Island find a vortex of swirling mist which engulfs their canoe, draws them into it and transports them back thousands of years to a time when native cultures ruled the area. They emerge from the mist to bright sunshine and the laughter of children playing. The old Indian village heritage sight, their original destination, is spread out before them as a living entity in its prime. At that moment, Ebony, the black wolf realizes who he is and that he has come home. He jumps overboard to avoid capture by native warriors and swims ashore escaping into the woods. Daniel and Running Fawn are captured and taken to one of the wigwams and are to be burned at the stake. Following the reappearance of Ebony, Daniel and Running Fawn are released and become valuable clan members of the First Nations’ village and with their 21st century knowledge begin to change history. Running Fawn out exploring the lands nearby, encounters a war party of over eighty enemy warriors planning to attack and destroy the village and everyone in it. Determined to save the village, Running Fawn, with the help of Ahawi, an outcast squaw living on her own who wishes to earn the right to return to her people, guides the enemy forces over the falls on the river to the Big Water. To honour Running Fawn for her brave actions, The Great Mystery, Kitchi-Manitou, the God of all Manitous and father of Ebony, the black wolf, commands that Running Fawn will appear in the mists of the falls at a specific time each day for but a few seconds. And from within the falling waters will be heard the cries of the enemy warriors. Running Fawn’s Legacy is the third of five novels planned in the series of novels about the black wolf.
