Readings to run bookshop at the State Library of Victoria

State-Library-Logo-_red_-ri Readings Books, Music & Film is very pleased to announce that it has won the tender to open a bookshop in the foyer at the State Library of Victoria, Australia’s oldest public library and one of Victoria’s great treasures. This is the first permanent commercial bookshop in the Library’s 150 year history. Readings is delighted to be able to expand into the CBD and be part of the exciting program of exhibitions and events at the State Library.

Readings has taken an active role in the cultural life of Melbourne. Readings offers an extensive program of literary and musical events throughout the year. Readings was actively involved in establishing the Melbourne Writers’ Festival (Managing Director Mark Rubbo was founding chair) and is currently the Official Bookseller for the Melbourne Writers’ Festival. Readings looks forward to its involvement with the State Library of Victoria, one of Australia’s oldest and most loved cultural institutions.

The Readings at the State Library shop will open on Friday 24th April. The opening hours will be: Monday to Thursday 10am – 6pm, Friday to Sunday 10am - 5.30pm. During the free exhibition, The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria exhibition the shop will be open until 9pm on Thursdays.

Readings has grown to be the largest independent book retailer in Australia with book and music shops in Carlton, Hawthorn, Malvern, Port Melbourne and St Kilda. With a staff of over 130 full and part-time employees, Readings has been twice awarded Australian Bookseller of the Year and four times Victorian Independent Bookseller of the Year. This year Readings celebrates its fortieth birthday.
