redd-kross2012 produced a couple of incredible comeback albums and Bill Fay’s Life is People was the first.

After almost 40 years in the wilderness, cult and influential English songwriter Bill Fay delivered a collection of songs stunning in their humanity, simple wisdom and depth of emotion. A truly beautiful and inspiring piece of work.

The other great comeback of 2012 is Researching the Blues. L.A.’s Redd Kross returned after a 15 year hiatus and seriously put the power back in pop. This cracking record is full of genius hooks, crunchy guitars, sunshine harmonies and tunes, tunes, tunes.

bruce-springWhilst America lurching from one economic disaster to another, Bruce Springsteen gives us a journal of our time with Wrecking Ball. Songs of the downtrodden and suffering then give rise to the dawn of a new day.

There is no-one alive today that does what Springsteen does and has been doing for over 30 years. This is an album of great anthems that speak to anyone who cares about what goes on in the world. Play it loud!

In contrast, Big Moon Ritual from Chris Robinson Brotherhood is a hippie fest of laid back, lazy Sunday afternoon jamming in your back yard. No song is under 7 minutes but time passes freely. Throw in Neal Casal on guitar and vocals for street cred. I really love this album.

spaceman*Sweet Heart Sweet Light* from Spiritualized is fantastic psych-rock album which, like much of J Spaceman’s work, draws heavily on gospel and soul music, devotional hymns and mantras.

This is a considered and beautifully crafted album. It’s full-bodied, energetic and symphonic, and it’s lots of fun to play.

My other pick is for Nocturnes by The Wild Nothing. This album has been extremely well mixed and is damn lovely to listen to. It’s smart, catchy, uplifting dream-pop, which I believe is just perfect for summertime!
