Christine Helliwell: Semut
Readings Hawthorn — Woiworung Country, 701 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn, Victoria, 3122
We are thrilled to have Christine join us to discuss her work Semut.
Semut by anthropologist Christine Helliwell is an astonishingly vivid account of how sixty ordinary men - mostly Australian - won over the indigenous Borneo Dayak people to the Allied cause, and together with them cleared the Japanese from large inland areas of Borneo in the final months of WWII. Focussing on a Z Special operation along two of Borneo’s great rivers – the Baram and Rejang – the book provides the first detailed military history of Semut II’s and Semut III’s brutal guerrilla campaign against the Japanese.
