Actress Zooey Deschanel is the ‘she’ and singer songwriter M Ward is the ‘he’ on this enchanting debut album. Don’t be afraid of the actress turned singer cliché here – perhaps singing is her stronger talent now. She has a sweet, rich and at times playful voice that is a pleasure to hear in some very original songs with elements of folk, country and 60’s pop pastiche about them. Be charmed by two tracks in particular, I Was Made For Lovin’ You and Sweet Darlin that grab your attention and put a smile on your face. There are two covers on this CD: You Really Got A Hold On Me and I Should Have Known Better – and they should have known better and stuck to their own stuff, because they are disappointing. Give them a go.
