The Disreputable History Of Frankie Landau-Banks: E Lockhart

Frankie Landau-Banks used to be weedy, studious and thoroughly forgettable. But, suddenly and unexpectedly, in the summer of her sophomore year, Frankie undergoes a transformation. When she returns to her exclusive boarding school, people who never noticed her before are suddenly falling at her feet. She lands herself the dream boyfriend and gains entry to a new social circle. Frankie should be grateful – right? But she can’t help noticing that boys are treated differently to the girls in her new group. Frankie wants to do everything the boys do, including joining the secret, boys-only society, the Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds. Frankie seizes an opportunity when she finds the Order’s long-lost manual, The Disreputable History. She poses as one of the Order’s leaders, using a fake gmail address, and begins to direct their covert pranks. Everyone in school is in awe of the Order – until they realise they have been led by a girl.

This book made me think and laugh in equal parts. Frankie is witty, analytical and observant; while she’s not immune to the twin seductions of popularity and group membership, she never ignores her true feminist instincts.
