The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren

I read this beautiful, sad adventure story by Astrid Lindgren (of Pippi Longstocking fame) repeatedly as a child and still have my old dog-eared copy.

Young Rusky is very sick and everyone knows he will die. His brave brother Jonathan regales him with stories of a place called Nangiyala, where they will meet after death and have adventures. Unexpectedly, Rusky’s brother dies first in an act of bravery, and it is not long before both are in Nangiyala.

Here, Rusky can walk and run again, and has a beautiful horse and home with his brother. But life is not perfect. An evil lord has conquered half the kingdom and is plotting to take over their valley with the help of a terrifying dragon. Jonathan Lionheart risks his life to save the kingdom and Rusky stays by his side, despite his fears.

With themes of courage, pacifism and brotherly love, this is an utterly compelling story with a devastating conclusion, where Rusky must finally show his own bravery. Highly recommended for adventure lovers, ages nine and up.
