Oh, Beth, here to steal our hearts again with her first album in six years, soulful and yearning as ever. ‘Magpie’ takes for its nest the best of her older songs, but with polished edges and dark corners that round into something soft and gentle.
‘Something More Beautiful’ bursts with all the pieces of a ballad, taking Orton’s singular, fragmenting voice and building it into something expansive and voluminous before drifting back into the raw folk that is all at once her own.
Fiona Hardy sells books and talks too much to customers at Readings Carlton, and puts together Dead Write for the Readings Monthly. She blogs haphazardly about movies and books (and sometimes music) and you can follow her on twitter - @readwatchtweet.
