Part Symphony No. 4 & Fragments from Kanon Pokajanen
In the world of classical music, Arvo Part is unique. some might say his compositional style is minimalist, but I think that maybe he has gone beyond that. His music has been described as tintinnabulation: based, as the name suggests, on the ringing of bells. And on reviewer described the sound-world he has created as 'subtle and often static'. I would also add that it's extremely beautiufl. Part's journey back int the world of they symphony (his first symphony in nearly 40 years) is one that doesn't fit neatly into the accepted idea of symphonic music, which for this reviewer makes the journey into the world of Part interestinga nd enjoyable. The 37-minute work is augmented on disc by a new montage of 'fragments' from Kanon Pokajanen, a piece which Part feels is closely related to the symphony.
