Mozart: Violin Concertos 3 & 5: Richard Tognetti & Australian Chamber Orchestra

Mozart’s violin concertos are definitely more difficult to play than they sound, which can lead to all sorts of problems in the hands of lesser musicians. Fortunately, the hands of Richard Tognetti and the ACO are very good.

Their recording begins with Violin Concerto No. 3, an intimate work full of sweet and beautiful melodies. For this reviewer, nothing in the Mozart catalogue touches the listener’s musical soul quite like this piece. Tognetti and the ACO really hit their stride with Violin Concerto No. 5 – a formidable piece, graceful yet technically demanding – delivering a stirring performance.

The final work is the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin & Viola: another inspired performance, with beautiful work on the viola from Christopher Moore. Once again, Tognetti and the ACO prove what valuable assets they are to the classical music world.
