East of the Sun, West of the Moon by Jackie Morris

A beautiful rendition of an ancient Norwegian fairytale. A bear visits the girl and tells her that if she comes with him, her poor family will live well and she will be happy. She goes with the bear to an enchanted castle where she lives a good life. Yet she accidently breaks the enchantment and the bear (who is really a young man) is forced to return to the castle of a troll, who lives east of the sun and west of the moon, and marry the troll’s daughter.

The young woman begins a long, desperate journey to find her love that takes her to the home of three wise women, four winds and beyond. This is a mysterious, lyrical story written and illustrated with great beauty by the inimitable Jackie Morris.

Readers of fairytales from 11 and up will enjoy.
