Dark Eyes: Tomasz Stanko Quintet
The great Polish trumpeter, long a Readings favourite, unveils his new young Finnish/ Danish quintet. He’s added guitar, and the heartbeat of the group is now a primal, pulsing electric bass. Make no mistake, Stanko’s singular trumpet is still the main voice here – his hypnotic, incantatory melodic statements give wing to extended flights of brilliance. Like his hero Miles Davis, Stanko keeps getting better and never falls for routine. A major achievement.
