Candide, Bernstein

I find this opera very interesting. Along with Bernstein’s West Side Story it walks that fine line between musical theatre and opera. While West Side definitely has one foot firmly in musical theatre, Candide leans more towards opera. This concert performance has Lenny himself at the helm of the musical proceedings and Humphrey Burton directing. There is great feeling in this performance as Bernstein although working hard, is not looking well and would pass away the following year. Complete with high drama and love duets, if you don’t know Candide this is a great way to be introduced.
