Caldara in Vienna: Forgotten Castrato Arias

Fans of the countertenor will be aware of Philippe Jaroussky’s passion for researching and bringing to light relatively unknown music. This time he has immersed himself in the music of Antonio Caldara – a contemporary of Vivaldi. Much like Vivaldi, this music is lively and passionate, and that is certainly how it is delivered. Jaroussky’s voice is astounding as always, but just as compelling is the playing by Concerto Köln, under the direction of Emannuelle Haïm – playing which drives these performances with vigour and attack, and makes Caldara’s music impossible to ignore.
