Bottesini: Capriccio Di Bravura
There’s an instrument in the orchestra that sits behind the body of the strings, oft forgotten and definitely not appreciated. This is the double bass. Totally neglected at the back of the orchestra, if you haven’t heard this instrument as a soloist I have to confess, you’re missing out. With the lyrical qualities of a violin, depth and sonority of a cello and lower brass, it truly has the best of every world. Rick Stotijn has put together a delightful collection of double bass chamber works by Giovanni Bottesini. Not a composer I was familiar with, the pieces are highly romantic in nature which allows Stotijn to show off his virtuosity and versatility as a musician.
